In a country where basketball courts often eclipse the spotlight, and volleyball teams steal the crowd’s attention, one wakeboarder from Cebu is carving his own path on the water. Raph Trinidad, a world-ranked wakeboarder, stands as a beacon of resilience, perseverance, and a living testament to the power of pursuing a passion even when the world seems to look the other way.

The Spark That Ignited Raph’s Journey
Raph’s journey into the world of wakeboarding began not in a gym or a traditional sports field, but on the water, thanks to his uncle. “I discovered wakeboarding through my uncle, so he was the first wakeboarder in the family and he introduced my mom to wakeboarding,” Raph recalls. His mother, after trying the sport, immediately saw potential in him and urged his father—who was in China at the time—to give it a shot. She called him and said, “Dad, this sport is not for us but it’s for Raph.”
At the time, Raph was busy playing soccer, but as soon as his dad returned from his trip, the two of them hit the waters together. “As soon as I stood up on my wakeboard, I knew right there and then that this was what I wanted to pursue,” Raph says, recalling the moment that would change his life forever.

The Challenges and Triumphs of a Wakeboarder
Despite the initial spark of passion, Raph’s path was not without its hurdles. Wakeboarding, particularly in the Philippines, is far from a mainstream sport, and that brought its own set of obstacles. But perhaps the greatest challenge he faced was the constant struggle to master new tricks. “The biggest challenges for me in my wakeboarding career was definitely learning new tricks because every trick you try it won’t always come easy,” he admits.

It’s this perseverance that has fueled Raph’s growth as a wakeboarder. The phrase “No pain, no gain” became more than just words—it became a mantra that pushed him forward. “This is what also pushed me even harder to keep on trying because I knew I could do it, and the feeling of landing a trick you’ve fallen on for days, weeks, sometimes even months is the best feeling in the world.”

A Filipino Representation on the World Stage
Despite the hurdles of competing in a niche sport, Raph is proud of his role in representing the Philippines on the global stage. “Representing the Philippines has always been one of my greatest achievements and what I have been most proud of,” he reflects. He knows that wakeboarding may not have the same fanfare as more popular sports like basketball or volleyball, but he’s determined to change that.

“We are slowly but surely doing things in the Philippine wakeboarding community to push for more support in the sport we love,” he shares, recognizing the collective effort that is slowly gaining momentum within the local scene.
Raph’s Message for Dreamers
Raph’s story isn’t just one of athletic prowess; it’s a message to anyone who has ever dared to dream in a space where they feel unseen or unsupported. To those who are on a similar journey, chasing something that doesn’t have immediate recognition, he offers this piece of advice:
Never give up on your dreams. I know that sometimes we are chasing this dream that no one else can see happening but if you truly believe in yourself that this is your path and you’re passionate about it. Go all in and never ever give up.

Raph’s journey is a powerful reminder of the value of staying true to one’s passions, no matter how unconventional they may seem. In a world that often prizes the mainstream, his story stands as proof that success comes not just from fame, but from the courage to forge a path that others might not yet recognize. Raph Trinidad is not just making waves on the water; he’s making waves in the hearts and minds of dreamers everywhere.
