The 14th Year Of Bulihan
Sampaloc recently celebrated the 14th Bulihan Festival from April 20 to 26, filled with festive flair and cultural significance.
“Buli” or “buri” refers to the palm tree used by locals in weaving traditional crafts like hats, bags, and décor.
The festival highlights this iconic material by showcasing stunning handmade products and artistic creations in a week-long cultural showcase. Activities include the Sombrero Contest, Payas Contest, Buli Crafting, ARKOntest, and a colorful Grand Parade around Sampaloc’s main streets.
Locals presented hats made from buri in vibrant colors and glowing decorations during the anticipated and joyful Sombrero Contest.
The Payas Contest featured underwater-themed street designs with mermaids, shells, sea creatures, and pearls, enhancing Sampaloc’s already picturesque townscape. Winners received up to P100,000—recognizing creativity, talent, and promoting sustainable craft-making within the town’s artistic community.
The Grand Parade brought together schools, organizations, and residents in costumes, floats, and lively performances, celebrating heritage and artistic expression.
Festive Highlights
April 20 opened with ARKOntest, a creative archway competition; April 21 followed with Buli Crafting and Siryabutan dance events. April 22 hosted Balikbayan Night, reuniting returning residents with heartfelt performances, music, and community celebrations under the summer sky.
The Grand Procession, Bulihan Night lit up April 23 with music, faith, culture, and dazzling night skies.
