14 Years of Celebrating Culture and Promoting Local Products

The Philippines offers more than warm hospitality—its vibrant culture and colorful festivals reflect deep traditions, history, and national pride. Among these celebrations, the Bulihan Festival in Sampaloc, Quezon proudly showcases local artistry, heritage, and Filipino creativity through unique buri crafts.

This annual event brings the community together, drawing both locals and tourists to appreciate culture, tradition, and beautifully handcrafted products.

Sampaloc is a scenic valley town surrounded by the lush Sierra Madre mountains, located between Lucban and Mauban, Quezon Province. Once called Barrio Dingin, Sampaloc was renamed after a giant tamarind tree once standing in the town center.

In 1902, Sampaloc officially became a town and slowly shaped its distinct identity through traditions, stories, and community spirit.

Visitors can experience Sampaloc’s breathtaking views, festive culture, warm hospitality, and delicious native delicacies loved by locals and travelers alike.

Its growing popularity lies in its charm, peace, natural beauty, and joyful annual festivals like the colorful Bulihan celebration.

The 14th Year Of Bulihan

Sampaloc recently celebrated the 14th Bulihan Festival from April 20 to 26, filled with festive flair and cultural significance.

“Buli” or “buri” refers to the palm tree used by locals in weaving traditional crafts like hats, bags, and décor.

The festival highlights this iconic material by showcasing stunning handmade products and artistic creations in a week-long cultural showcase. Activities include the Sombrero Contest, Payas Contest, Buli Crafting, ARKOntest, and a colorful Grand Parade around Sampaloc’s main streets.

Locals presented hats made from buri in vibrant colors and glowing decorations during the anticipated and joyful Sombrero Contest.

The Payas Contest featured underwater-themed street designs with mermaids, shells, sea creatures, and pearls, enhancing Sampaloc’s already picturesque townscape. Winners received up to P100,000—recognizing creativity, talent, and promoting sustainable craft-making within the town’s artistic community.

The Grand Parade brought together schools, organizations, and residents in costumes, floats, and lively performances, celebrating heritage and artistic expression.

Festive Highlights

April 20 opened with ARKOntest, a creative archway competition; April 21 followed with Buli Crafting and Siryabutan dance events. April 22 hosted Balikbayan Night, reuniting returning residents with heartfelt performances, music, and community celebrations under the summer sky.
